James Baldwin appears in Boston public television producer Henry Morgenthau III’s “The Negro and the American Promise,” alongside Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. The New York Times described the James Baldwin segment as “a television experience that seared the conscience.” The interview was recorded in 1963 after Baldwin’s “secret meeting” with U.S. attorney general Robert F. Kennedy. The interviewer is psychologist Dr. Kenneth Clark.
E. Ethelbert Miller is a literary activist. He is the board chairperson of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). He is a board member of The Writer’s Center and editor of Poet Lore magazine. Since 1974, he has been the director of the African American Resource Center at Howard University. Mr. Miller is the former chair of the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. and a former core faculty member of the Bennington Writing Seminars at Bennington College. Mr. Miller is author of two memoirs — Fathering Words: The Making of an African American Writer, and The 5th Inning — as well as several volumes of poetry including How We Sleep on the Nights We Don’t Make Love, Where Are the Love Poems for Dictators. And Mr. Miller is editor of the anthology Beyond the Frontier African American Poetry for the 21st Century.
